Like myself, many of you will have walked past the bowls green in Evington Park without a moment’s thought of what actually goes on the other side of the barrier.
Crowded out by the park bushes and shelters provided, a lovely, almost carpet-type bowling green is hiding away out-of-sight and out-of-mind, crying out to be used.
As I did last Bank Holiday Monday, instead of walking past the green, why not broaden your horizons and pay the friendly and welcoming club a visit?
Open most days except for Thursdays and weekends due to match-days, the club is actively looking to improve its membership and regardless of age, background or physical appearance – anybody is welcome.
Usually divided into two-hour paid sessions from 10:30-12:30pm and 2-4pm, different members of the club staff the rota on different days and on Monday evenings the club have a “friendly role-up” type session for those who are interested in joining with the first three sessions for newcomers free of charge.
To join and compete in matches for Evington Park Bowling Club – a park rather than private green maintained by the council – will cost £20.00 for a full membership. Or, if you simply fancy a game and want to try your luck at a new sport you can pay as little as £2.40 for a game with the club more than happy to provide equipment.
Despite being tucked away the club already has a membership of over sixty people and is always encouraging more people to join in and have a bowl – continuing with their next open day next Bank Holiday Monday, May 25th.
