THE LEICESTERSHIRE SPEAKERS MARCH 2010 WHERE ARE LEICESTER'S DAUGHTERS? In the true spirit of a good speakers' club, Anne Jones succeeded in informing and entertaining. She told us about the City of Leicester's plans for a Walk of Fame. She increased our knowledge of ‘Sons of Leicester' already immortalised in place names such as Simon de Montfort and Richard 111 (buried in Leicester – somewhere?) David Attenborough and Englebert Humperdink must wait their turns for permanent recognition. But, Anne wanted to know, where are the daughters? Answers to the Leicester Mercury, please. Hiten Vyas also entertained and amused with his advice on succeeding at a job interview. Mingled with plenty of common sense came answers not to use such as: ‘I don't know. What does it say on my CV?' Hiten warned us not to take his advice too seriously had he had just failed a job interview! A ‘maiden' speech from beginner Nennette Scrivener built beautiful word pictures based on a holiday in Cairo, Petra and more places just as exotic. An excellent start. Stan Barrett read his own story, which speculated on what happened to Cinderella and her prince after ‘they all lived happily ever after.' This light-hearted tale with a tragic end bore a remarkable similarity to the life of Princess Dianna. The instant three-minute speeches were organised by Frank Kovacs on the well-chosen theme of ‘materials'. There was much speculation about where we might be without the likes of glass, fabrics and plastics. Morag Wilkes, North Eastern born and bred, knew about iron and steel and Dot Barnard trod with care along the path of the uses and joys of leather. David Ellison was thoroughly entertaining about the versatility of lambs' wool. It's even in our computers! The Leicestershire Speakers welcome anyone who would like to learn the art of speaking in public. Our meetings are supportive, informative and entertaining. We offer enthusiasm and encouragement to help turn nervous wrecks into confident speakers. We meet at 7.30pm on the second Wednesday of each month at the Blaby Drop-In Centre. For more information ring Anne Jones on 0116 2772295, or visit our website www.leicspeakers.co.uk. We are also available to give entertainment and talks to other societies and groups.
