LOCAL SPORTSMAN'S SUDDEN DEATH

Steve Cloke who has lived in Evington for over 40 years died suddenly on May 17th. He was 64 and died doing what he loved best, coaching tennis. He was a familiar figure in Evington, in his track suit and trainers, and known to many local people and the tennis world of Leicestershire.

He was a talented all round sportsman, and represented the county at tennis, table tennis, and squash in the 60s and 70s. Tennis was his first love however, and he has held at some time all the major county tennis titles with one exception. He was a finalist 6 times in the Men's Singles but this title always eluded him.

His working life began at Jones and Shipman as an engineer but whilst still employed there, he qualified as a tennis coach and became a full time coach in the mid 70s. He was appointed Professional Coach at The Leicestershire Lawn Tennis Club, a position he held for over 30 years. He has coached hundreds of players of all abilities and ages, and many are indebted to him for giving them a lifelong activity.

He also enjoyed snooker and for many years played for The Humberstone Constitutional Club. More recently he has played pool for The Dove team and was a well loved and skilled competitor. A few weeks before his death Steve had joined the Evington Bowls club and was already in demand to play for a team. The club has undoubtedly lost a valuable team player.

Steve enjoyed playing cards, and was always in demand for quiz teams especially for the sports and music rounds. He loved a good sing song, always had a story to tell and was admired for his ready wit and humour.

Steve will be remembered first and foremost as a lovely man and devoted father. His late wife, Ann, also a tennis player, sadly died 16 years ago leaving Steve with three children Louise, Jennie and Jonathon. Steve was very proud of them all and thrilled to be grandfather to four children. Jonathon currently represents Leicestershire at tennis and is also a tennis coach.

Steve has touched many people's lives and will be sadly missed.
