A GOAN RESTAURANT

Local resident and Goan chef Vorvin Fernandes.

Vorvin, is one of three chefs at the new Goan restaurant at 76 Highcross Street in Leicester which is called 'Anjuna' after a beach in Goa, India. This newly opened restaurant serves authentic Indian and Goan food. Goan food is a fusion of Portuguese and Indian cuisine and has a mixture of distinctive flavours including coconut, palm vinegar and red chillies.

Vorvin says, “I would like Evington Echo readers to come to Anjuna and to sit back, relax and enjoy the taste of Goa, especially as it is the only Goan restaurant in the Midlands”.

Vorvin, who has lived in Evington all his life, has loved cooking from an early age when he learnt all the 'traditional' Goan methods from his mum Ida Fernandes who is a fantastic cook and also lives in Evington. Therefore, traditional family recipes and secrets have been handed down from one Goan generation to another! Vorvin is a member of the Leicester Goan Association where a majority of its members are based around Leicester and in particular Evington.

The Leicester Goan Association was established in 1978 and has over 200 members. The ethos behind the Goan Association and the Goan Community is to 'Promote and Safeguard the Social, Spiritual and General Well-being of its members'. One of the long established members of the Goan Association said “We are delighted that there is finally a Goan restaurant in Leicester, we wish all at Anjuna the very best with the new venture.”
