LEAGUE TABLES
Dear Editor,
I was both pleased and alarmed by the article in the last edition of the Evington Echo called ‘Evington Schools contribute highly to the record breaking GCSE results in Leicester!'
I was pleased to see how well Evington schools are performing and send my congratulations. Feeder primary schools also need to take credit.
I was alarmed because I think that league tables mislead people and can create a culture of competition that damages education. Education in its wider sense needs to encourage young people to use their imagination, learn how to think and question what they see and hear. To use a building analogy, “it should be about a process of building blocks upon which individuals can start to erect their own structures later in life.” The Evington Echo does a good job informing readers of the excellent learning experiences young people are getting in our local schools.
