NEWS FROM ST DENYS

On Sunday 1st November at 6.00pm we held our annual All Souls Service to remember those who had died during the past eighteen months and others where relatives had asked for them to be included. We welcomed over 100 people to this service and it is very apparent that it is a great comfort to those who attend. A time to quietly remember their loved ones in the context of a service where names are read out and there is an opportunity to light a candle in their memory.

The Remembrance Service on Sunday 8th November was attended by a large congregation which included a contingent from the scouts with their flags as well as representatives from the former British Legion branch.

This year the stark reality of warfare had been brought home to us very forcibly by the events that had happened in Helmand Province on the previous Wednesday. In his sermon the Vicar said that not only were we remembering those who had died in two World Wars but also those who had died in later conflicts.

On Wednesday 11th November at 11.00am a short service attended by about 60 people was held at the War Memorial in the village. The names of those who had died in the world wars were read out, the last post and reveille were sounded, the two minutes' silence at 11 o'clock was observed and prayers were said.

These are occasions when the church takes responsibility for providing a service to the community. It is clear from the number of people that came to the services in church and at the war memorial that there is a need for this ministry of pastoral care.
