BURROUGH HILL Melton Mowbray, famous for its pork pies, is approximately 15 miles from Evington. If you take the scenic route you'll pass through many pretty villages in the lovely Leicestershire countryside.
Burrough Hill, 5 miles south of Melton, is well worth a visit. At 690 feet it is one of the highest points in Leicestershire. A toposcope points out landmarks that can be seen from the summit. On a clear day you can see Lincoln Cathedral, but be sure to take your binoculars! Burrough Hill is crowned by an iron-age hill fort with well preserved ramparts. Within the ramparts is a large grassy area – ideal for a picnic on a summer's day. But no need to wait for summer, this beautiful part of Leicestershire is perfect for invigorating winter walking. Get well wrapped up – you really are exposed to the elements once on top of the hill. A circuit of the ramparts is a good half-hour's walking, stopping to take in the breath-taking panorama. There are way-marked trails, and for the more adventurous make up your own walk using Ordnance Survey map 129. Once you've worked up an appetite you can continue your journey to Melton to visit Ye Olde Pork Pie Shoppe. Dickinson & Morris has been baking pork pies here since 1851. It's the oldest pork pie bakery and the last remaining producer of authentic Melton Mowbray pork pies based in the town centre. Burrough Hill is open daily from dawn until dusk. Car parking is £1.50 and there are toilet facilities and an information board. Wear suitable footwear, as paths are uneven and can be muddy, and warm clothing suitable for winter walking. Sue Massey |
