SHADY LANE CAMP Dear Editor, I am trying to find information regarding the camp on Shady Lane between the years of 1950/55, as a child born in Leicester in 1948 my family was rehoused in the Shady Lane camp (nowadays we would call it social housing). From memory, conditions were pretty bad: no electricity, no made up roads, tin bath etc, basically living in sheds. There was also the social stigma (I was always told as a child to never tell people where we lived). I get the feeling that Leicester Council also were ashamed of it (allowing its citizens to survive in such appalling conditions) and that is why it was flattened. All I can find on the ‘net' is that it had been used as an army camp and possibly P.O.W camp. If you know of any articles regarding the ‘camp' during the 50's I would be most interested.
