EVINGTON HILL LADIES’ CLUB

Zara Matthews, of Harborough Museum, was our last speaker for 2011. She normally gives talks on the Hallaton Treasure and she told us how excited she was that the rare Roman helmet was being returned to the Museum in January, after restoration work at the British Museum. On this occasion however, she gave us a presentation on the famous corset manufacturing firm of R & W H Symington & Co Ltd. The Museum is housed in the old Symington’s factory which was sold to Harborough Council. Zara explained the history of the firm which started as a grocery business and which, by 1914, was the largest employer in Market Harborough. The Company is well documented with photographs and film and was generally thought to be an excellent employer.
The Ladies’ Club had a very successful year, rounded off with their Christmas party. Membership numbers have remained constant and visitors are always welcome at our monthly meetings in the Village Hall.
