THE LEICESTERSHIRE SPEAKERS JAN 2012
FUNNY COAT HANGERS
No one can make a short talk about coat hangers funny. But Carol Hayward did. In a hilarious fantasy of strange-sounding European innovators, Carol concluded that Mr Sketchley invented the ubiquitous wire coat hanger!
This was just one of fifteen speeches in an evening organised by Jo Northam. Members had to choose one of Jo’s subjects and were given ten minutes to plan a two-to-five minute speech. They were of surprisingly high quality. Margaret Barrett discovered that only a quarter of the people present still took a daily newspaper. She then developed an intriguing history of the rise and fall of the newspaper.
Other subjects, which were treated in either informative or entertaining ways, included New York, railway stations, hats, shoes, elephants and cheese. A thoroughly rewarding evening
