WONDERFUL WELNEY

Swans, such graceful, elegant birds, are a familiar sight in Abbey Park and Watermead Country Park. These mute swans are distinguished by their orange beaks.
This time of year is when the less familiar Whooper and Bewick swans come to Britain for their holidays! Whoopers migrate to Britain from Iceland – an 800 mile non-stop flight. Bewicks fly in from Russia. They start arriving around October and set off in March and April for their respective homes where
they return to breed.
If you would like to see Whoopers and Bewicks in their thousands, visit the Welney Wildlife and Wetland Trust, near Wisbech. Check out their website for the latest information on migrating birds, opening times, and admission charges. Wonderful Welney – you won’t be disappointed.
