THE ECO TOWN

Dear Readers,

You, the Evington Echo readers, will be familiar with many of the criticisms of the Co-op's plans for their 15,000-home Eco town (called Pennbury) on land by Stoughton airport.

Earlier issues have explained why the location is unworkable and unviable. But did you also know that the Co-operative Group have not yet contacted Severn Trent Water about planning the water supply and sewerage? Other unplanned areas are policing, hospitals and social services.

CASCET (Campaign Against the Stoughton Co-op Eco Town) say “This eco-town risks becoming a car dependent joke” and “zero carbon targets are unrealistic”. “ There will be thousands of commuters leaving the town each day for employment elsewhere.”

To find out whether Pennbury will be listed in the last 10 of the Government's selection, we now have to wait for the DCLG (Department of Communities and Local Government) to sift through all their responses. It is unlikely that there will be any decision until the autumn or even winter.

CASCET need to rebuild their funds so that they can mount a legal challenge should Pennbury be on the final list. So please support us. Unfortunately the planned festival has had to be cancelled.
