CELEBRATING A MASSIVE LOTTERY BOOST Headway Leicester, a local charity supporting people with acquired brain injuries (that was featured in the Feb/March edition of the Evington Echo), is thrilled to announce a bumper Big Lottery Fund (Reaching Communities) grant of £146,295, awarded to support their ‘Woodwork: Skills for Life' project. The money secures the project's future for the next five years – paying for salaries, equipment and running costs. Headway Leicester's Service Director, Mary Goulty said: “We are delighted to be awarded this grant – woodwork is such a valuable part of our provision because it aids and promotes recovery in so many ways. Everyone can access the project, whatever their abilities, and woodwork definitely improves their confidence, skills, strength and stamina, giving people an increased sense of achievement and independence.” The value and popularity of the project to Headway House Service Users cannot be underestimated, growing to full time in only 3 years. Jayne Tranter, a former Nurse, suffered an aneurysm (bleed on the brain) in 2006 and is still unable to walk unaided. Jayne is full of praise for the project: “I had a left sided stroke and I never thought I'd ever do woodwork. I've been making simple, useable things and it's really helped my confidence and self esteem. I reckon it's great!” |
