SING UP BOYS! Dear Editor, Whenever England play international football matches and the national anthems are played at the beginning, I notice that only a few players, if any, bother to sing it. The worst offenders have to be Wayne Rooney then probably Steven Gerrard. I've never known Wayne Rooney to sing the national anthem – he just stands there, head slightly bowed looking moody. The national anthem should be sung clearly, loudly, proudly and with passion before each and every England international. The World Cup especially. These players have been privileged enough to be selected for their country in a tournament which is played every four years. And if the players don't know the words to the National Anthem then learn them! One of the good things about David Beckham is that he always sings the National Anthem clearly and with pride before a game although it looks unlikely that Beckham will be in the squad now due to a ruptured Achilles tendon. A good confident well sung national anthem would give everyone a lift, a buzz and instil confidence – and perhaps even a bit of fear into the opposition. What a well drilled side this England outfit are – don't fancy playing these much. I could even stick my neck out and say it might possibly be worth a goal start. Steve Billingham |
