EVINGTON HILL LADIES CLUB The September talk by Gareth King was on the history of village names. For example, simple geographical descriptions of rivers like Avon, Dee, Ex, Ouse mean fish, tree, water, big water in the Celtic language. Breedon on the Hill means hill: hill on the hill. Place names changed as people learned to spell. Gareth explained that two villages with the same or similar name can have very different histories. It was a fascinating and lively account of how names have developed over the ages. Our lively and friendly club is always open to new members. Carole Sturgess |
