OAK TREE ON SPENCEFIELD LANE

Dear Editor,

Thank you for your enquiry regarding the removal of the Oak tree on Spencefield Lane. The tree had reached a stage called ‘over maturity' and was being attacked by a fungus called Ganoderma Applanatum. This is a root and stem-base attacking fungus that eventually renders the tree liable to breakage. As it attacks the roots it is not an obvious fungus to detect initially, but it becomes directly responsible for die back in the crown and gradual de-foliation. The risks to the public and carriageway became unacceptable, so this tree needed to be removed.

Due to the tree's position in the footway, we will not be replacing it with another tree in this location (as we are normally obliged to do). We have decided to plant a new oak (as its replacement) on Goodwood Road sometime in the autumn this year.

The old stump on Spencefield Lane will be ground out and the footway re-instated.
