9 TH LEICESTER SCOUT GROUP CELEBRATES ITS CENTENARY
The ‘9th' held its first meeting in June 1909 and since then has offered continuous scouting activities to the young people of Leicester . In 1931 it built its headquarters in Stoughton Road where it continues to meet.
This June the Group held a reunion and birthday party to celebrate this milestone in its history. Peter Konig (ex Leicester Tigers Player), contacted the Saturday Mail's ‘Lost and Found' column with a photograph of scouts outside the London Road Station on their way to camp. This article resulted in Peter being in touch with many past fellow scouts and kick-started the reunion. On Saturday June 27th there was a barbeque lunch; Scouts, Explore Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Beaver Scouts demonstrated their scouting skills, and past members spent a happy time reminiscing and looking at the group's large collection of photographs.
Over many years the Group has enjoyed the tradition of visiting Kandersteg International Scout Centre (KISC) in Switzerland . In July we joined the 1st Markfield and the 58th Leicester (Oadby Group) and took a party of 57 to the Centre. Our youngsters took part in many adventurous activities and earned prestigious badges. For older scouts, the highlight of the camp was taking part in the Lotschenpass Hike, an opportunity to experience glacier walking. We spent a day in Bern and visited the Oeschinensee Alpine Lake where we swam in its cold waters (part of one of the awards!), rode the summer sledge run, and took part in the Centre's International Campfire and International Evening. It has been a great year so far for the ‘Ninth'. We continue to providing great scouting experiences for local youngsters from the ages of 6 to 18. New members are always welcome and adults wishing to share the experience can become fully trained, warranted leaders. For further information contact Kay Newland - Group Scout Leader.
