BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER

For over a hundred and fifty years Leicester Secular Society has been bringing people together to exchange views, listen to stimulating speakers, and simply enjoy meeting one another. Since 1881 this has been in its hall, Secular Hall, on Humberstone Gate.

In the last few months speakers have included the Rev. Professor Michael Reiss on “Science, Religion and Education”, Anil Bhanot, Chief Executive of the Hindu Council UK, on “Hinduism in a Secular Society”, Terry Sanderson, President of the National Secular Society, on “What is a Secular Society” and Ned Newitt on “Old Slums of Leicester”. Coming soon are talks by local figures Manzoor Moghal on “Religions and Misguided Government Policy” and Resham Singh Sandhu on “Sikhism in a Secular Society”. On the social side we are looking forward to an afternoon of vintage film comedy “Rib Ticklers”, a piano recital, and some walks.

We believe that people from all backgrounds have in their shared humanity the ability to help one another to enjoy a more fulfilling life. For this we must be able to freely exchange and publish our views. We must get to know and trust one another. Our children should attend the same schools and learn to live together; they should be welcomed for and feel proud of the good things that their culture can contribute. Schools should not promote one belief. Government policy should emphasise what we have in common, our mutual dependence and our future together rather than our differences. Religious bodies should not be privileged in the governance and running of the country.

The Society is flourishing: membership is rising, and we are pushing ahead with a modernisation scheme for the Hall.

Everyone is welcome to our Sunday evening 6.30pm meetings.
