RETIREMENT OF TWO LONG SERVING VOLUNTEERS Two of our longest serving volunteers on the Echo have recently retired and we would like to acknowledge our appreciation of the contribution they have made since the earliest days of the paper in 1981. Phil Jessop, who has lived in the Evington area since 1958, was initially asked to check out an advert which was to go into the Echo and shortly afterwards took on the role of Treasurer, holding this position for many years. On retiring he took charge of advertising, and thoroughly enjoyed meeting people, discussing their requirements and chasing the payments! When the Echo became computerised Phil decided it was time to pass this role to someone younger . Not being one to shirk his responsibilities he volunteered to deliver the Echoes, which he has done for the past few years. Many residents on the Uppingham Road end of Downing Drive will have seen him doing his round with his dog. Mrs Laughton Braid has also retired after 27 years of delivering the Echo. When I asked how long she had done it for, she told me she began when her daughter was a baby, and she felt doing the deliveries would make her get the pram out and walk! Her daughter is now 27! Mr Laughton Braid remembers advertising with the Echo and meeting with Phil Jessop. We are very grateful to Phil and Mrs Laughton Braid for their service to the Echo and wish them many years of happy retirement. If any readers would like to volunteer to deliver Echoes I still need some reserves for the coming summer when often deliverers are away on holiday. Please contact me on 2415444. |
