60 KILOMETRES FOR 60 YEARS? Rev. Stephen Heygate, Vicar of St. Denys Church, will turn 60 later this year. To celebrate this event, along with five companions he completed a 60 kilometre walk to raise money for the two mission partners that St. Denys supports in Uganda. In darkness, at 4am on Friday 18th July, six keen walkers set off along Newhaven Road to Thurnby. From Bushby the walk followed footpaths to Ingarsby, across fields to Billesdon, onto Skeffington and over the A47 to Laude for a well-earned breakfast. Refreshed after their first ‘pit stop', the group continued striding out along footpaths to the village of Brooke, the half-way mark. Only 30 more kilometres to do! Leaving Brooke, with Rutland Water in the distance, Egleton was the next port of call. Full of enthusiasm, the group continued around Rutland Water. Along the stretch towards Whitwell, friends from St. Denys joined in! The walkers were Steve, Chris, Simon, Moira, Andrew, John and Roy with many supporters along the way. Jill and June, the all-important back-up ladies, provided much-needed refreshments along the way. Many thanks to all our generous sponsors. We have raised in excess of £2000. Some of the proceeds were donated to Anne and Allan who gave a presentation at the 10 o'clock service on 27th July on the work they are doing in Uganda. This will be used to contribute to the building of a new church. Roy Hammond |
