LITTER Dear Editor, I heard recently that Bill Bryson, the American author, has written a new book in which he complains about all the litter deposited in the English countryside. His answer is to take a bag and pick it up while on his frequent rambles. Every morning I walk to Evington along the original Evington Lan., It is an attractive stretch of road, but my early morning walk is spoilt by the number of ‘pop' bottles, cigarette packets, coke-cans and sweet wrappers thrown away in this area. I decided to follow Mr Bryson's example and have purchased a ‘pick-up stick'. Armed with this and a supermarket bag, I do my ‘litter patrol' en route for my early morning paper. It doesn't solve the problem but at least the area is clean for a while and I feel I've done my bit for the environment. Can I suggest that a) staff at Evington schools speak to their pupils and try and persuade them that dropping litter is not ‘cool'; b) that the local council provide some litter bins on this stretch of road; and c) that those of your readers who enjoy walking take a leaf from Bill Bryson's book and purchase a ‘Helping Hand' – I call them ‘Pick-up Sticks'. These can be obtained from the Red Cross Centre on Clarendon Road. John Robinson |
