This issue has seen many exciting events taking place in Evington, including the Village Fete & Show, the Opening of the Burnaby Gardens in Evington Park, and the Special Olympics at Evington Leisure Centre from 27th – 29th July.
The Special Olympics is the result of years of dedicated training by the athletes, their trainers and the support of family and friends. Sports took place at venues throughout Leicestershire. Events at Evington Leisure Centre included ball kick, ball push, ball lift, walking and 10 pin bowling. I felt deep admiration for everyone involved. This was a life changing experience for me, as I now have a much clearer idea of what sport is all about. The athletes are an inspiration to us all. Special Olympics Chairman, Ted Cassidy, said “This week has surpassed every expectation I had for the games. The athletes, their families, the volunteers, the games team and the people of Leicester have made this a world class event.”
What do you think about having an open gardens event in Evington next summer? This could raise some money for the Echo's ‘good causes' pot for local things. If you are interested in helping in any way or opening your garden then please contact Addy on 241 7159 or me on 220 4525. Another idea is a charity walk. Please phone me (220 4525) with your suggestions.
The Evington Echo team will be holding their Annual General Meeting on 14th October at 7.00pm. This gives interested helpers and readers the opportunity to view our accounts and learn more about us. If you would like to attend, please contact Mike Stevens on 273 0493.
