SQUATTERS IN THE CAMP ON SHADY LANE

Dear Editor,

My brother Albert “Bud” Fisher, served in the Royal Navy in World War 2. He was demobilised after hostilities ceased and he and his wife Margaret did not have a place to live as there was a shortage of housing at that time.

The Americans followed by German and Italian Prisoners of War had left the camp at the bottom of Shady Lane and it was unoccupied. ‘Bud' and several others took advantage of this situation and moved in; squatters would be the term used now.

He lived there until the early 1950's when more suitable accommodation in the form of a council house was available. Bert sadly died at an early age but his wife Margaret still lives in Leicester.
