THE THURSDAY GROUP On 21st May an interesting talk, “By Appointment – Royal Warrant Holders”, was given by Mr Graham Fortey. Mr Fortey explained that the Royal Warrant, which dates from the reign of Queen Victoria , can only be granted at the present time by the Queen, Prince Philip and the Prince of Wales, in respect of items or services used specifically by them. The warrant, when granted, is operable for a limited period of 3 years, after which it can be extended. However, it can be withdrawn if deemed appropriate in specific circumstances – as in the case of Harrods! The presentation was supported by an interesting display illustrating how the Royal Warrant has been indicated by the Royal Arms and the words ‘By Appointment' by manufacturers on their premises, products, invoices, etc. Mr Fortey brought along a varied collection of ephemera associated with the granting of the Royal Warrant, many items being over 100 years old.
