A WALK AROUND EVINGTON WITH VIRGINIA WRIGHT The walk started at Evington Library and explored Piggy's Hollow, the Arboretum, St. Denys Church and finished inside Evington Chapel. Virginia Wright explained that Evington was one of six villages on the edge of Leicester . Evington parish used to cover a huge area including North Evington, Evington Valley and Spinney Hill. The name Evington dates back to Anglo-Saxon times when it was originally known as Aefa's Tun. This became Avintone and finally Evington. There is a possibility that there could have been a Roman cemetery on the site of Evington Park , but there is not much evidence of the Romans in Evington, even though the Roman Road , Gartree Road , is nearby. Virginia's interesting talk included the deer park in the 13th and 14th Centuries, the Women's Suffrage Movement, the establishment of schools, the history of the Cedars and Evington House, how Piggy's Hollow got its name, the American camp in Shady Lane and the history of Evington Chapel. |
