A BOX OF CHRISTMAS CUSTOMS

Our speaker, Mrs Lynn Mellor entertained Evington Hill Ladies Club with her box of Christmas memorabilia and her vast knowledge of the history of Christmas customs.
Back in ancient times, there had been a festival of light at this dark time of the year, to give people reassurance that the sun would come again. In 350AD, Pope Julius decided that 25th December was probably the right time to celebrate Christmas. This date neatly fitted onto the existing pagan celebrations.
Lynn 's talk continued to explain about the reasons why holly, ivy, mistletoe, poinsettias, Christmas trees, Christmas cribs, cards, crackers, robins, mince pies, pantomimes and yule logs are associated with Christmas.
Our group holds monthly meetings in the Village Hall that are always advertised in the Evington Echo (see Dates for Your Diary). You are welcome to come along as a visitor and then decide later if you would like to become a member.
