NEW PLAY EQUIPMENT IN THE PARK New play equipment is being installed in the Park! The winning choice for the main piece of multi-play equipment is called ‘Galaxy', and it will replace the ‘castle'.
From a letter in a previous issue of the Echo, we know you will be sad to lose the castle, but it's not so bad, because at least three favourite parts of it will be used in the extension to the play area. There will also be a new roundabout and many other landscaping /play features. For more details you can see a plan on the notice board in Evington Park and on the TARA notice board by the Chemist's shop in Evington village. The money for this project has come from a grant from the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF). Leicester City Council are refurbishing six play areas in the City and Evington Park is the first one and should be completed well before the end of March. Councillor Andy Connelly, Cabinet Lead for Culture and Sport said, “I am delighted to hear how well the Evington Park project has gone. Good liaison with the community through the ‘Friends Of' group at Evington Park and our play officer, Adrian Edge, has meant that over 1000 students, aged from 8 – 13 years, in six local schools*, have been consulted about what they enjoy doing when they play and about which piece of play equipment they liked the best. The ‘Friends Of' and Park staff have been fully involved in discussing this project. Congratulations to all those involved.” The play area closed on 20th January for refurbishment. The work should be finished in four to six weeks. A special opening event will take place on a Saturday one or two weeks after completion. Watch out for the advertisement posters, as this will all happen before the next Echo is out.
