EVINGTON RESIDENT TO BECOME THE NEW LORD MAYOR

Councillor Manjula Sood, who lives in Evington, holds the position of High Bailiff of Leicester. Leicester is one of very few cities within Great Britain where the ceremonial duties of the Office of High Bailiff are maintained and the ancient title is still in existence. As the High Bailiff, Manjula assists the Lord Mayor, but in May this year she will become the new Lord Mayor of Leicester.
Manjula was born in Ludhiana in India and graduated from Punjab University. In 1972, after gaining her PGCE at Leicester University, she became one of the first Asian female primary school teachers in Leicester. She taught at Marriott Junior, Bridge Junior, East Park Primary and Spinney Hill Primary schools.
Following the sudden, tragic death of her late husband, Councillor Paul Sood, Manjula represented the Abbey Ward from 1996-2003. Since 2003, she has represented the Latimer Ward and the Golden Mile, Belgrave Road. Over the past 10 years she has served on a number of major committees and is currently Cabinet Lead for Health and Well-being. She has raised funds for many charities, including the fluid warmer cabinet for A&E at Leicester Royal Infirmary, and she has sponsored children overseas.
Manjula is the proud holder of the Woman of the Year Award 2006 for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.
The Evington Echo team wish her every success with her new role as Lord Mayor.
