MAYFLOWER METHODIST CHURCH
GOLDEN JUBILEE
Mayflower Methodist Church was built 50 years ago this year, to replace a church in Saxby Street which was bombed during the war. As part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations, we have invited back some of our previous ministers to take services. In January, Rev Dr Martin Forward came (all the way from the United States!), and this popular reunion is to be followed by visits from Rev Alison Geary on 30th March, and from Rev Dr Tony McClelland on 18th May. On June 22nd our special preacher will be Rev Gareth West, who grew up at Mayflower at home with his parents, Ron and Peggy, twin sisters Heather and Felicity and younger brother Malcolm.
GOLDEN FAYRE
On Saturday, May 17th we shall hold a Golden Fayre from 11.30am to 2.30pm with various stalls, and lunches served from 12.30pm, and we look forward to welcoming old friends and past members who have moved away from the area.
LENT SERIES
During the season of Lent our members have taken part in three Lent groups, with members of other churches in the Evington Churches Together association. On Good Friday we joined with others in the City Centre to celebrate “Christ in the Centre”, the powerful drama staged in the city streets of Leicester, preceded by an enactment of John Wesley’s visit to Leicester, staged in the Castle Yard.
LOSSES
In February we lost a much-loved and respected member of our congregation, Carl Pereira, who has attended Mayflower for many years since coming to England from the Caribbean. In March another of our long-standing Caribbean members passed away. Louis Springette was well known to many for his enthusiastic appearances at Grace Road Cricket Ground. We give thanks to God for their faithful witness, and extend our sympathy to their families in their loss.
