EVINGTON HILL LADIES' CLUB

Our recent speaker was Mike Coleman who has a lifelong interest in the secret world of the Enigma code machine and the history of Bletchley Park and Beaumanor Hall in Leicestershire.

The talk was fascinating and Mike explained some of the technical aspects of the work. He is endeavouring to have some of the buildings at Beaumanor preserved as a permanent reminder of the hard work and sacrifices of those who undertook this absolutely essential war time work.

One of our visitors told us she had worked at Beaumanor Hall shortly after the war, when it was unchanged and a G.P.O. establishment. A piece of living history to round off a memorable evening.

We also enjoyed a very light-hearted evening in the company of Brian Lord, an ex-Evingtonian, who is a member of the Leicester Magic Circle. His card tricks and sleight of hand were amazing! We were relieved when he returned a complete £20 note, borrowed from a member, that had previously been shredded before our eyes. The ladies were in peals of laughter when moths flew out of his wallet.

His tricks were accompanied with some very corny jokes. He showed us children's party tricks and explained how they're done. There should be some young children now very impressed with their mother's/grandmother's newly acquired talents!!

Our next speaker will be Fiona Ure telling us about‘Medicines of the Past' on June 18th at 7.30 pm. Visitors are most welcome. Telephone 273 5487 for further information.
