NO ESCAPE WITH DNA FINGERPRINTING1 A group of 20 Crown Hills Year 10 students recently had the opportunity to visit the Genetics Department at the University of Leicester, accompanied by Science teachers Mr. Valera and Ms Marriot. The purpose of the day was to take part in a DNA Masterclass in the University's purpose-built GENIE Lab. Group activities included: extracting DNA from a banana, amplifying DNA by PCR (Polymerizing Chain Reaction), loading a DNA gel and ultimately solving a crime scene using the technical know-how learnt. The students were further rewarded when, unexpectedly, Professor Sir Alec Jeffreys, world famous pioneer of DNA fingerprinting, agreed to spend some time with them talking about his work. Altogether a very inspiring day. Chris Pollock |
