SNAKING THROUGH EVINGTON You might have seen a group of cyclists snaking through Evington. Six children from Leicester Grammar Junior School, with two instructors, have been experiencing riding on real roads in real conditions! This is part of the National Standard Bikeability training – cycling proficiency for the 21st century. Under the tuition of Jamie Rennie, Head of Sport at Leicester Grammar Junior School, the children were put through their paces. Previous instruction had taken place in the playground where the children learned to brake, signal and manoeuvre competently and confidently. Then it was on to the road to put their skills into practice. The children were accomplished riders, enthusiastic, well-behaved and benefited from the whole practice of road-riding. They especially enjoyed the experience of snaking – which means travelling in a line with one instructor at the front and one at the rear. This enables the trainees to concentrate on their bike handling skills while road riding, rather than thinking about signalling and positioning, which is controlled by the instructors. To all those considerate and patient motorists, thank you for your courtesy. Let's all be safe drivers, safe cyclists and safe pedestrians, and learn to respect each others' very different needs on the roads of Evington. Sue Massey & Jamie Rennie Editor's comment: The Evington Echo is sorry to see LGJS leaving the area, but wish staff and students every success at their new site in Great Glen. |
