WHITEHALL KIDS GET CREATIVE

Pupils at Whitehall Primary were given the chance to display some of their most imaginative pieces at the school's annual ‘Spotlight on Learning' event. Councillor Paul Westley was one of many who attended the day, which focuses on teaching subjects in the National Curriculum, such as History, Technology and R.E., through creativity.

The colourful displays included a large sculpture made from recycled materials of Amritsar's Golden Temple and also computer-generated Islamic prayer mats. Portraits were also on show, including collages of Queen Victoria, John Lennon's glasses, Warhol-inspired pictures and work about Ancient Egyptians and Vikings.

Lego robots fitted with webcams were programmed to drive up and down a 20ft model of Evington village. Created by Year 3, it was complete with local shops and a plasticine recreation of the Village Green.

Pupils also took part in demonstrations such as Aboriginal painting and some worked with Diversions Theatre Group to dress up as Tudor nobility and Florence Nightingale. In addition, there were displays from the Leicester Masaya Link group and Fairtrade. There was also a very popular cake stall to raise much-needed funds to build an outdoor classroom for the Foundation classes.
