People of all ages and from all backgrounds are being invited to Sew Off! an event organised by Lightseekers which aims to connect people through the creative arts.
The event is being held as part of activities to mark International Women’s Day 2017 and will offer participants a unique day of sewing, art and craft, and the chance to meet new people, learn new skills and contribute to make a collaborative tapestry.
This event is accompanied by a spectacular exhibition, ‘Moksha’ (liberation), in the atrium. The work forms part of award winning visual artist, Kajal Nisha Patel’s Leverhulme Artist Residency at The University of Leicester. More than 100 individuals from eight different community groups participated in the creation of this work. This is the third time the work has been displayed, each time, taking on a new meaning.
Sew Off! will be held at The Peepul Centre on Orchardson Avenue on 9 March 2017. It starts at 11am and runs till 4pm. It is a drop-in session so you are invited to stay for as long or as little as you like.
Award-winning photographer and Lightseekers founder and Director, Kajal Nisha Patel says: “Sew Off! is a culmination of a year-long project in which we worked with more than 100 people from settled and newly arrived communities. At its core, the project aims to use art and craft as a way of bringing people from different backgrounds and cultures together.
“With the exhibition and workshop we are holding as part of this year’s International Women’s Day, we will also be celebrating Leicester’s diversity and the spirit of caring, sharing and solidarity that pervades many aspects of life in this city.
“The event is free and everyone is welcome. Drop-in anytime”.
