CELEBRATING THE 300th YEAR OF SRI GURU GRANTH SAHIB JI Since Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maaharaaj left this Earth in 1708, the Sikh faith has respected Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji as their true eternal guru – the “shabad” guru. Before this, 10 gurus had previously been respected as the Sikh guru where only the physical bodies changed, but the divine spirit within remained the same. This is the same divine spirit that lives in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji today. The word “Guru” means teacher. The holy scriptures (Gurubaani) within Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji provide a way of life for the Sikhs to follow and apply within their everyday lives. Even though the Sikhs had physical gurus, the “Guru” was not the body or the facial features but was the messages and teachings provided by the Guru. In October 2008 Sikhs around the world will be celebrating the 300th year of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Ways in which Sikhs commemorate are by carrying out parades through cities; creating community programmes for the benefit of other regardless of religion, colour, age, gender or social status; making special pilgrimage to the Punjab. Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji provides unique and unequalled guidance and advice to the entire human race. Sikhs believe that with the support of their guru, humanity can be led out of any era of evil and into a life of peace, tranquillity and spiritual enlightenment for all nations and religions of the World.
