WHITEHALL 'S GOOD CITIZENSHIP AWARD

What makes a good citizen? The children at Whitehall School must have a good idea as the school recently passed an Ofsted inspection relating to citizenship with flying colours.

The Inspector Mrs Judith Matharu was impressed with the range of “enrichment activities” that take place within the school, especially the “mini-enterprises”; competitions and discos organised by the children to raise money for worthy causes at home and abroad. Other local projects include an allotment group organised by Age Concern and joint projects with Oaklands School . They have also written the August Kids' Page for a local community paper - yes for the Evington Echo. Pupils are concerned with global and environmental issues; there is a thriving ‘Eco-Warriors' group which have links with the Leicester-Masaya Link group and are working towards Fair-trade Schools status.

There are many opportunities for pupils to take responsibilities within the school, such as the School Council where a representative from each class can put forward the class's views and influence developments within the school, class helpers and House Captains.

Identity and diversity are celebrated, whether it is through religious celebration or learning about other cultures. Each class studies a particular country and takes part in studying the “Language of the month”; this month we are all learning Russian! (or at least trying to!)

The Inspector was also impressed with how the subject of Citizenship is not treated separately but is imaginatively thread throughout the whole curriculum. She particularly praised staff for their enthusiasm, leading to exciting creativity and good motivation.

There is a strong sense of community at Whitehall ; the children have respect for others and a good understanding of the many cultures within the school. This leads to a better understanding of the part they play in the local and world-wide community.

We have, however, had to say farewell to some of our longest-serving teachers. Mrs Margaret King and Mrs Vivienne Evans have both retired and are planning to take life a little easier! Mrs Sarah Ridley has also left us; she is going to be rather busier in her new position as Head Teacher at Willowbrook School . We wish them all the very best for the future.
