The Sitting or Standing keep fit classes, in association with the Get Going Together Project and a grant from the Evington Ward, take place every Wednesday afternoon at Evington Park House. The 45-minute long sessions start at 12 noon and classes are open to all, regardless of age and fitness level. There is an opportunity to join in and do as much or as little as one can manage. On the Wednesday afternoon of my visit, the group expressed how much they enjoyed the health benefits of the classes and the variety of exercises taught, marvelling at the instructor’s extensive bank of exercises that varied from week to week. Movement was encouraged through gentle exercises focusing on joints and muscles all around the body. Co-ordination and concentration skills along with deep breathing remained the focus throughout the class. Calm music created a relaxing backdrop as the participants worked and stretched. Irene, who attends regularly, described the classes at Evington Park House very positively. “ It has opened up a whole new world for me. I feel motivated and enjoy the chance to meet people. If it wasn’t for such classes I would have been just been at home.” The classes end with all literally laughing out loud to exercise the abdominal muscles. Positive energy is passed around the group through a range of clapping routines, bringing out smiles ensuring all feel good by the end of the class. At the end, all enjoyed a cup of tea and a chat, having thoroughly enjoyed their workout. Instructor led classes take place every two weeks and meet the first and third Wednesday of each month. In between, there is a self-help group that gathers at the same time to exercise and continue enjoying health benefits and one another’s company.
