On July 30th St Denys’ Parish Centre played host to ‘Cooking Spanish Tapas – the healthier way!’, the perfect way to spice up anyone’s weekend. The selection of treats included: Patatas Bravas, Cracked marinated Olives, Cheese & Olive Empanadillas and Pan-fried Chorizo & Rustic Bread. All the food created a gorgeous aroma that could be smelt all around, and anyone who managed to sneak a whiff couldn’t resist having a quick taste.
This is one of the several classes being run by the Leicester Ageing Together, in partnership with the Workers’ Education Association. It was a free class for those over 50, aiming to integrate people into the local community and offered those living in isolation the chance to socialise. In addition, it provided a great opportunity to learn exciting new skills, helping those over 50 broaden their horizons. Leicester Ageing Together is running similar projects throughout the 5 wards, (Evington, Spinney Hills, Wycliffe, Belgrave and Thurncourt), thanks to their lottery funding.
The class was run by experienced dietitian, healthy caterer and expert cookery tutor Dipti Patel from ‘A Bite Different’. After being taught how to cook by her Mother during her childhood in Leicestershire, Dipti discovered a love for world cuisine during her many years of travelling the globe, which meant that she was able to mix with different cultures and try local foods. This has transformed into a passion for healthy eating and creating nutritious world dishes, as an alternative to unhealthy takeaway meals. This class is one of the ways in which Dipti hopes to motivate, educate and inspire people of all backgrounds to realise the benefits of healthy eating.
If you are disappointed to have missed out on the session keep an eye out, as Dipti hopes to run similar classes around the area in the future.
