Almost all of us have faced the daunting experience of taking the driving test, some of us more than once. On 13 September 2016, Leicester U3A will be hosting a talk by Brian Johnson called: ‘Follow the Road Ahead: the History of the Driving Test’. The talk is at Christchurch, 105a Clarendon Park Road, LE2 3AH at 2.45pm. Brian’s talk will look at the reasons for introducing the driving test in 1935 and describe what the first driving test was like. His talk will consider how the test has developed over the years in response to changing demands on drivers and will give an account of the nature of the test learner-drivers face today. Brian Johnson was involved in the training and testing of drivers for 33 years. Brian was an approved driving instructor for car drivers, a qualified instructor for the driving of both heavy goods (HGV) and public service (PSV) vehicles, a driving examiner and then Senior Driving Examiner. In addition, he visits schools, colleges and prisons to talk about learning and driving safely and he has trained other driving examiners to contribute to this work. Leicester U3A is part of a world-wide movement whose members are retired from full time-employment. Its members form a community offering social opportunity and learning for life in an exceptionally relaxed and enjoyable way. Our many, diverse interest groups are the engines of this life-long, self-help learning and the source of much social interaction. For third agers, learning is for fun: there is no distinction between teachers and learners and people meet to share the hinterland of their knowledge and experience Note: 1. Nationally the U3A was founded in 1982 and has grown steadily since that time. There are now 996 U3As in the UK, with a total of 366,184 members. 2. Leicester U3A was founded in 1996. Its website can be found at 3. The U3A organises social activities and informal, life-long learning for people in their third age – that is, those who are retired from full time work.
